Hi, I’m Bridge and I am thrilled that I am able to share my story with you. In terms of the real me, I am a Mum to my beautiful daughter Stella and am excited to say that I have another child on the way. Like most Mums, I lead a busy lifestyle trying to juggle looking after the family, preparing meals, working part-time, ensuring the house admin is done AND finding time to look after myself – we lead a VERY busy life and often feel that we don’t have time to exercise, eat healthy and look after ourselves.
The truth is, we are all busy and the idea of changing our lifestyle (for the better) can feel very overwhelming.
My passion in health & wellness started long before I was thinking about family and stemmed from a number of health issues.
When I was in my mid 20s, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. At the time, I thought my life was over – all that good food I would be missing out on. But really, this diagnosis changed my life. My life long gluten free diet begun and it wasn’t the end of the world.
I definitely felt better as a result of excluding gluten but still not 100%. At the time I thought I was eating healthy foods (i.e. a low fat diet) and I was exercising a lot (cardio especially) but for years, I really wasn’t seeing the results or feeling as good as I should. It took me a long time to really start to think about the food that I was eating and how it was affecting me physically and emotionally.
I also suffered from insomnia, anxiety, bloating, headaches and my reproductive and hormonal system shut down. And a change in diet and lifestyle definitely helped me with these health issues.
When we starting thinking about having a family and then when I found out I was pregnant I recognised even more about the importance of what you put into your body as I wanted to ensure I was eating nourishing foods for this growing child. Additionally, when breastfeeding and looking after a small baby I realized that as well as eating the right food, I needed as much energy as possible to look after my family and of course, myself. I finally started really listening to my body and in turn, eating better and really looking after myself. My real interest in Health & Wellness begun.
In terms of the changes I made during this time, I decreased the amount of processed foods, sugar and (obviously) alcohol. I also realized the importance of healthy fats, good quality protein. No more counting calories and worrying about a low fat diet. I initially lost a bit of weight but the best benefit for me was that I had much more energy and felt less sluggish. I also realized that due to my body type, intense cardio really wasn’t good for me, it was putting additional stress on my body which I definitely did not need. I started walking each morning and also started incorporating more Yoga into my life – much less intense exercise.
I also realized that for a long time I had been suffering from anxiety. I think this was more of a subconscious thing and also thought that the anxiety, stress or worry was normal. When I realized that I was in fact always in “flight mode” this also led me to increase the amount of Yoga. My Yoga then led to including meditation and breathing exercises into my day and I noticed that I was less stressed.
I now strive to eat very cleanly and cook healthy meals from scratch for my family. I ensure my meals contain healthy fats, good quality protein and plenty of fresh (organic where possible) fruits and vegetables into my families diet. I lead a busy life, working, being a mum and a wife and also finding time for myself, but it really is easy to make meals from scratch and anyone can make time for this. It’s all about what you prioritise. We all have time to prepare meals that do not involve processed foods (even a busy mum who’s also working).
Soon after my daughter was born I realised that I needed to do what I had always wanted to do – extend my knowledge of nutrition and in turn help others. There is no time as the present and I thought if I didn’t do it right away, I never would. I enrolled in the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and loved my course and am so proud to now call myself a Health & Wellness Coach.
I strive to help others like me. I have learnt a lot from my past experiences and would love to help those, especially Busy Mums learn how to incorporate healthy eating, exercise and self-care into their busy lives.
